Top 10 Reasons to be a UMMC IM Resident

10. The arts

Being the state capital, Jackson has a variety of museums, including the Mississippi Children's Museum, Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum, Mississippi Museum of Art, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Russell C. Davis Planetarium. We also have the Mississippi Opera, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, and are on the off-Broadway theatre tour. Notably, Jackson is also the official U.S.A. home for the International Ballet Competition, which hosts dancers from over 30 countries across the globe.

9. Entertainment

The Fondren District sits adjacent to the Medical Center and is an eclectic mix of restaurants, coffee houses and bars which provide an ample amount of nightlife opportunities. Jackson is home to the Braves minor league baseball team, which is a favorite amongst the residents. We also have a great outdoor life with water sports on the reservoir and running/biking trails on the Natchez Trace. There is also never a lack of fantastic shopping and restaurants.

8. Location

Jackson sits in the heart of SEC country with an easy drive to Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, Starkville and Oxford. It's also about three hours from Memphis, Birmingham and New Orleans. More locally, it's less than a 15-minute commute to the hospital from any suburb area outside of the capitol.

7. Affordability

Jackson provides one of the lowest costs of living in the southeastern United States. Average listing price is $186,813 for a home for sale in Jackson. There are also many affordable options in the surrounding suburbs of Madison, Clinton, Brandon, Ridgeland and Flowood. In most cases, the price of a mortgage is less expensive than the cost of rent in the Jackson area and surrounding communities.

6. Reputation among the students

The Department of Medicine has won teaching Department of the Year from the medical students over 10 years in a row. We have also had a resident win the Gold Humanism Excellence in Teaching Award for six of the past seven years. We are known to be a friendly department that makes it a priority to teach and foster a sense of learning and teamwork among the students on our service.

5. Young, vibrant faculty

We have outstanding and enthusiastic faculty, both in leadership and at the subspecialty department level. We consistently win Attending of the Year voted on by the students. Our faculty are highly motivated to teach and invest themselves in the lives of our residents and students.

4. Wide array of fellowship opportunities

The richness of an internal medicine residency is dependent on exposure to all subspecialties in medicine. Here at UMMC, we have every represented subspecialty experience integrated into the core curriculum, and our residents who pursue fellowship in other areas of the country consistently match with success.

3. Only tertiary care facility in the state

As the only academic health sciences campus in the state of Mississippi, UMMC attracts a wide variety of patients from across the state and occasionally from surrounding states. The spectrum of disease, and the care and treatment options to be considered, encountered on the ward services is vast and nearly all-encompassing.

2. Family atmosphere

Research opportunities

UMMC gives great attention to the education of its residents. To supplement direct patient care education, residents participate in a daily morning report led by the chief resident, attend daily noon conferences that cover both core curriculum and board preparation, complete monthly online ambulatory modules, produce scholarly activity, and participate in quality improvement projects.
